Europe and Asia: Cultural Policy and National Identity
Daiwa Foundation Japan House
Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation
To mark the EU-Japan Year of People-to-People Exchanges, this seminar addressed the subject of cultural policy and national identity. How national image and culture may be projected abroad and how cultural policy is adapted to different overseas contexts were explored from the perspectives of the British Council, the German Embassy and the French Institute. The balancing of expectations and stereotypes and the coordination of national festivals and bridge-building initiatives were aspects of policy and management that speakers and panel members considered in a discussion of the cultural dialogue between Europe and Asia.
