FAQs
DO I HAVE TO BE BRITISH TO APPLY?
Under the terms and conditions of the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies, only UK citizens are eligible.
The Foundation will only cover the equivalent of home student fees (domestic fees).
WHAT SUBJECT DOES MY DEGREE HAVE TO BE IN?
Applicants who hold (or are completing) a degree in Japanese Studies, defined as a course focussing primarily on the study of Japan, and containing a substantial Japanese language component, are eligible to apply for the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies.
Applicants who hold (or are completing) combined honours courses where Japanese Studies accounts for at least 50% of the course are also eligible to apply.
The Scholarship would be to cover a further course of study related to Japanese Studies, not the applicant’s first degree in Japanese Studies.
DO I NEED TO HAVE ENROLLED ON A COURSE AT THE TIME OF APPLYING FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP?
Applicants need not have enrolled on a course at the time of applying, but it is useful to know if applicants have identified a course and/or supervisor. Additionally, we need to know whether they intend to study in the UK or Japan.
Applicants who are already enrolled on a further Japanese Studies-related degree are also eligible for funding. Note that the Scholarship will not be granted in arrears.
HOW MANY DAIWA SCHOLARS IN JAPANESE STUDIES WILL BE SELECTED?
The intention is to support six individuals in any given year, of whom at least three must study full-time at a university in Japan.
THE APPLICATION NOTES SAY THAT OF THOSE APPLICANTS SEEKING FUNDING FOR COURSES AT UK UNIVERSITIES, PREFERENCE WILL GENERALLY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO WILL UNDERTAKE PART OF THEIR STUDIES IN JAPAN. MUST THEY BE AFFILIATED TO UNIVERSITIES IN JAPAN DURING THEIR TIME IN JAPAN? IS THERE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME THEY MUST SPEND IN JAPAN?
While in Japan the Scholar (affiliated to a UK university) does not need to be affiliated to a Japanese university. There is also no restriction on the length of the stay in Japan, but this has to comprise a valid part of the Scholar’s course in some sense.
CAN FORMER DAIWA SCHOLARS APPLY?
Under the terms and conditions of the Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies, applications from former recipients of the Daiwa Scholarship will not be considered.
HOW MUCH IS THE GRANT TO DAIWA SCHOLARS IN JAPANESE STUDIES?
Daiwa Scholars in Japanese Studies receive a maintenance grant of £1,200 for periods spent in the UK and ¥260,000 per month for periods spent in Japan to cover accommodation and living costs while on the programme. The Foundation’s support will be contingent on satisfactory periodic progress reports.
WHO SHOULD BE MY TWO REFEREES?
Your references should come from your academic tutors. The references are a vital part of the application and should come from people who know you and your academic work in an official capacity. It is also important to convey through references, if possible, your level of spoken Japanese.
If you would like to submit more than two reference letters, that is fine.
IS THERE A WORD LIMIT OR FORMAT FOR THE REFERENCE LETTERS AND WHERE SHOULD THEY BE SENT?
There is no format or word limit for the references. Any features which would make you an excellent candidate for the Daiwa Scholarship in Japanese Studies programme should be highlighted. Please make sure that your referees are briefed about the Scholarship, get to see the application form and discuss your appropriateness for it.
Please ask your referee to email the reference to Scholarships@dajf.org.uk
Ideally, the reference should be typed on letterheaded paper and emailed as a PDF attachment (from a work email address if possible). The applicant should not be copied in.
DO REFERENCES HAVE TO BE IN ENGLISH?
Yes.
WHAT SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL SHOULD I SUBMIT IN ADDITION TO THE REFERENCE LETTERS ?
Applicants are required to submit evidence of their Japanese language proficiency, graduation certificate copies and transcripts of current and previous courses attended.
WHAT SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL SHOULD I SUBMIT AS EVIDENCE OF MY JAPANESE PROFICIENCY? CAN I SUBMIT MY BA TRANSCRIPTS AND AN ADDITIONAL REFERENCE FROM MY JAPANESE TUTOR?
Applicants are required to submit transcripts. An additional reference from a Japanese tutor would be extremely useful.
IS HELP AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO HAVE A DISABILITY?
If you have a disability, please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments to be made in relation to the application process or adjustments in order to facilitate interview attendance. If adjustments are necessary in order to take up the Scholarship, these can be discussed at a later stage.
CAN I DISCUSS THE DAIWA SCHOLARSHIP IN PERSON WITH SOMEONE FROM THE FOUNDATION?
If you have any questions, please email scholarships@dajf.org.uk.
