Results Announced: March 2017 Grants Round

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation (www.dajf.org.uk) has published details of grants awarded to support UK-Japan projects in its latest funding round.

Three researchers from University of Portsmouth will travel to Kobe University in June 2017 to participate in a four-day workshop to promote understanding of the influence of maritime culture on the social and cultural landscape of port towns in the UK and Japan. The Foundation will also support Starfish Kitchen’s Japanese cookery workshops and demonstrations at ten schools across Lancashire, Cheshire, Cumbria and Manchester, reaching over 400 pupils and 150 teachers, school cooks and parents. The Amon Miyamoto Company will stage a new piece about Katsushika Hokusai at the British Museum’s Great Court with support from the Foundation, to complement the Museum’s ongoing Hokusai: beyond the Great Wave exhibition. Artists Daito Manabe and Nelo Akamatsu will travel to the UK with support from the Foundation to exhibit at festivals in Cheshire and Glasgow.

A number of Daiwa Foundation Awards are given to large-scale collaborations between British and Japanese institutions. Researchers from University of Tokyo and University of Southampton will jointly map the live corals off Okinawa using autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), utilising both universities’ expertise in underwater technology (see the AUV photo). University of Wolverhampton and Kwansei Gakuin University also received a Daiwa Foundation Award to support reciprocal visits by researchers to participate in open lectures and round-table symposia aimed at increasing awareness of victims of violent crime and how they are treated by both the UK and Japanese justice systems.
