Responding to Rising Crime in Japan

Daiwa Foundation Japan House

Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

What is the real level of crime in Japan? Recent figures released by the Japan National Police Agency have shown a growth in recorded crime in ways that are similar to trends in other industrialised countries. Noriaki Kawamura explained what contributed to the rise in recorded crime and the steps that are being taken to address the problem. Tom Ellis focused on how the media in Japan have taken a much keener interest in crime matters in recent years and how this may relate to a lack of trust and confidence in the police.
