The Lost Hokusai screening at the British Museum on Friday, 14 July 2017

Enjoy an exclusive screening of The Lost Hokusai (49 minutes) and Q&A with the director Hideaki Okauchi  and CG creator Yu  Kinoshita at the British Museum at 19.00 on Friday 14 July 2017 as a part of an event beginning at 18:00, “The road to Fuji: celebrating Hokusai”.

This documentary follows the incredible restoration process of a masterpiece by Katsushika Hokusai. Destroyed by fire in 1923, the 3-metre work has now been recreated based on the only surviving image, a single black-and-white photograph from the early 20th century.

Discover how the combination of cutting-edge image analysis technology and age-old art restoration techniques have brought this work back to life.

Followed by a Q&A with the director and CG creator.

You can also enjoy an evening of performances and activities celebrating the life, art and enduring legacy of Katsushika Hokusai, presented in collaboration with Japan House.

Visiting especially from Tokyo, see Chindonya, musical street entertainers employed to advertise shops and theatre performances, whose roots lie in Hokusai’s late Edo-period Japan. Chindonya groups would parade the streets with one member shouting out to the crowd, handing out flyers.

Hear traditional performances by tsugaru shamisen player Hibiki Ichikawa and folk singer Akari Mochizuki, as well as a performance of Ryan Probert’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji by English acoustic guitar duo Vickers-Bovey, inspired by Hokusai’s prints.

The evening will also include themed craft workshops, a community-led performance by older people from Camden, film screenings of the NHK production The Lost Hokusai (2017) and a pop-up sake tasting bar: The Road to Fuji, Celebrating Hokusai
