From March 2-6 2012, Dr Vicky Tuke (Daiwa Scholar 2011) participated in the first ‘Young Strategists Forum’, organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan. The programme brought together policymakers, academics, journalists and military officers between the ages of 25 and 39. The 17 members of the Forum participated in a day of seminars directed by Professor Aaron Friedberg (Princeton), followed by a twelve-hour simulation of potential crises affecting the Asia-Pacific region in 2015-2035. The participants visited Matsushima Air Base and travelled around the Sendai region to see the devastation wrought by the 3.11 tsunami firsthand. In Tokyo, the ‘Young Strategists’ held meetings with Foreign Minister Gemba, Mr Aki Nagashima MP, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister on Security and Foreign Policy, Yoshimasa Hayashi MP, MOFA, MOD and METI.
