Vacancy for a Japanese Language Assistant at Whitgift School

Categorised under:

A vacancy has arisen for a Japanese Language Assistant at Whitgift School, an independent day school for boys aged 10 – 18, situated in South Croydon, London.

The School was founded in 1596 by John Whitgift, Elizabeth I’s last Archbishop of Canterbury, and opened in 1600, making it Croydon’s oldest school; the present Headmaster, Dr Christopher Barnett, is the twenty-sixth in the School’s history. There are approximately 650 boys in the Lower School and 650 boys in the Upper School. Haling Park, to which the School moved in 1931, was at one time the home of Lord Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral of the Fleet sent against the Armada, and it retains the appearance of an attractive country estate.

Whitgift has assistants from 7 other countries – provided through the British Council. They are usually native-speakers who have just graduated in their own country (often from an English degree) and are keen to spend a year abroad perfecting their language skills. Sadly the British Council no longer run a Japanese scheme and so Whitgift are looking to recruit a Japanese Language Assistant independently.

The position is for 12 hours per week over 4 days. Whitgift offers subsidised accommodation and their assistants generally have a fantastic year exploring the UK, gaining teaching experience and perfecting their English.
