In the September 2018 grants round, the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation awarded an Award to the Royal Collection Trust. This funding facilitated a two-week research trip to Japan in spring 2019 to research and prepare for a major exhibition.

The exhibition was delayed (due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but has now been scheduled to open in spring 2022.

Japan: Courts and Culture opens at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace on 8 April 2022. It will continue until 12 March 2023.

“The Royal Collection holds some of the most significant examples of Japanese art and design in the western world. For the first time, highlights from this outstanding collection are brought together to tell the story of 300 years of diplomatic, artistic and cultural exchange between the British and Japanese royal and imperial families.”
