Cosmic Surfing by Kengo Kito
Daiwa Foundation Japan House
Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation
Kengo Kito was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1977 and currently lives and works in Berlin. He is renowned for large installations using common industrial materials, and these led to a major commission by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) in collaboration with Bloomberg and to Roppongi Crossing ’07, a survey show on leading Japanese artists at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. He was recently awarded the Gotoh Memorial Award and short listed for the VOCA Award for his paintings.
Kengo Kito has become one of the leaders of a new generation of Japanese artists. The exhibition, Cosmic Surfing, showcased his recent creation of a series of new paintings using images from fashion magazines. The original meaning and context that reflect the superficial society are lost and transformed into sublime abstract movements on his canvas.
