When Simon May took up a year-long post as Visiting Professor of Philosophy at the University of Tokyo, he was the first Briton to do so since 1882. Atomic Sushi brings together Simon’s sharp observations of Japanese life and society. As a newcomer to the country, he brings a fresh take on everyday Japanese life: love, death, bureaucracy, hygiene, food, toilets, commuting, education, marriage, and memory. His wry humour and shrewd analysis create vivid accounts of his personal experiences and try to make sense of his feelings of delight, frustration and bafflement towards an unfamiliar but fascinating culture.
