Edo Kabuki: Theatre Prints from the Herwig Collection

Daiwa Foundation Japan House

Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

To coincide with ‘Kabuki Heroes on the Osaka Stage, 1780-1830’ at The British Museum (until 11 September), this exhibition displayed actor prints from a different Japanese city, Edo (now modern day Tokyo). Prints by members of the Utagawa School illustrated the distinct differences between the artistic styles and traditions of Edo and Osaka.

About the contributors

Arendie & Henk Herwig

Arendie and Henk Herwig have been collecting nineteenth century Japanese woodblock prints for more than thirty years. Their interest has led them to an extensive study of the theatrical context of kabuki prints. Most of the prints in this exhibition are featured in their book Heroes of the Kabuki Stage.
