Collaborations between industry and academia have been crucial in contributing to industrial innovation. These partnerships, however, involve parties with differing interests, business models and cultures, creating challenges for both academia and industry.

In this talk, Professor Mikael Adolphson, University of Cambridge, and Kiyomi Hashimoto, CEO of Dojima Sake Brewery, discussed the current situation and challenges surrounding industry-academia partnerships. They used the example of collaboration between the University of Cambridge and Japanese enterprise to explain how UK universities and Japanese enterprises can effectively work together to promote industrial innovation.

This event was arranged in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in the UK.

About the contributors

Professor Mikael Adolphson

Professor Mikael Adolphson is the Keidanren Professor of Japanese Studies and Chairman of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge. After graduating from Lund University with a B.A. in History, Museum and Cultural studies, he studied Japanese at Stockholm University. He then went on to study at Kyoto University on a Japanese Education Ministry Scholarship before undertaking a PhD at Stanford University. Mikael has previously held academic positions at the University of Oklahoma, at Harvard University, where he was Assistant and Associate Professor of Japanese History, and at the University of Alberta, as Professor of Japanese Cultural Studies, where he served as Chair and Associate Dean.

Kiyomi Hashimoto

Kiyomi Hashimoto is the CEO of Dojima Sake Brewery, UK, and the Vice President of Dojima Bakushu Jozosho, Osaka, Japan. Through her role as CEO of Dojima Sake Brewery, Kiyomi aims to share information and ideas about Japan through sake. Kiyomi was previously the vice president of the Japanese Women’s Association in Great Britain and is a supporter of Japanese Studies at the University of Cambridge.
