To Pick Up the Shadow - A Photography Workshop by Toshiaki Hicosaka

Photography captures images of the world through the use of light. Could the shadows also create a visual experience – one that does not appear under the light?

This workshop invites you to take photos in central London at night using a unique and somewhat unorthodox method. The existence of light is essential for photography, much as it is for seeing the world with the naked eye. This is true even for photo shoots that take place in the evening, where typically natural light is supplemented by the use of a flash function.

Workshop participants are asked to bring their own digital camera that has a flash function. The artist Toshiaki Hicosaka will provide you with his original analogue device that can be attached to the flashlight, which creates a shadow in the midst of light. In this type of photography, imagery is brought forward through darkness instead of brightness.

The artist will exhibit selected photographs from the workshop as part of his forthcoming exhibition that opens on 30 May 2017 at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London.

About the contributors

Toshiaki Hicosaka

Toshiaki Hicosaka (born Aichi Prefecture, 1983) is a painter who currently lives and works in Kyoto. He is a part-time lecturer at Kyoto University of Art and Design and also at Kurashiki University of Science and Art. In 2004 Hicosaka began creating works using course-grained photographs as a base that were then painted with his original drawing techinques. Since then, he has continued experimenting with these media to construct architecture through the act of painting, challenging the relationship between touching the image and being touched by the image itself.

Hicosaka has hosted solo exhibitions at Aishonanzuka (2016, Hong Kong); Aisho Miura Arts (2013, Tokyo); Ohara Museum of Art (2011, Okayama); and Shiseido Gallery (2008, Tokyo). Selected group exhibitions include: ‘egØ – Re-examining the Self’, punto (2014, Kyoto); ‘New Phases in Contemporary Painting’, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art (2012, Hyogo); ‘TRANS COMPLEX – The painting in the Age of Information Technology’, Kyoto Art Center (2011, Kyoto); and ‘MOT annual 2008 Unravelling and Revealing’, Museum of Contemporary Art (2008, Tokyo). Hicosaka has received grants from The Pollock-Krasner Foundation (2009) and the Pola Art Foundation (2014).
