‘India and the UK-Japan Dialogue’ was the third in this year’s seminar series, ‘Changing World Views: International Challenges for the UK and Japan’ featuring contributions by Minister Wataru Nishigahiro, Envoy Extraordinary, Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in London and Barry Gardiner MP, who founded and chaired the Labour Friends of India.

Shun-kin: An International Co-production and Staging of Literature

This seminar will reveal the lengthy collaborative process involved in the creation of Shun-kin and the contemporary significance and challenges faced in staging the Japanese modern classic by Jun-ichiro Tanizaki. The production of Shun-kin was supported with a UK-Japan 2008 grant from the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.

Japan’s Middle East Security Policy: Theory and Cases

This study examines how Japanese policy toward Middle East security issues is shaped by the need to both maintain Japan’s security alliance with the US and its oil relationship with states in the Middle East. Yukiko Miyagi introduces the historic roots of Japan’s policy, and then focuses on the major contemporary cases – the Iraq war, the Iranian nuclear crisis, and the Arab-Israeli conflict, to expose and explain how clashing interests and dilemmas were negotiated to arrive at policy outcomes.
