Afternoon Talk by a Japanese Barrister at Essex on his research & anti-bullying policy, 14 June

There will be a presentation by, Mr Kiyoshi Hirao, a Japanese Barrister on his Research at Essex and Japanese anti-bullying policy on Friday 14th June 2013; 2:00pm-3:15pm at the Law Common Room, School of Law (5S6.17), University of Essex. 

In 2011, the Essex School of Law and Human Rights Centre established an agreement with the Japan Federation Bar Association (JFBA) by which every year the JFBA will support one Japanese practising lawyer to study the LLM in International Human Rights Law at Essex and another to spend a term or two as a visiting scholar conducting individual research. Under this agreement, Mr Kiyoshi Hirao joined the Essex Human Rights Centre in October 2012 as a visiting scholar and has been conducting research on anti-bullying mechanism in the UK. He gave presentations and recommendations to Japanese institutions based on his research at Essex and this has already had a great impact on Japanese education policy.

In his presentation, Mr Hirao will give an overview of the Japanese legal system in connection with bullying and how his research at Essex contributed on Japanese anti-bullying policy.

 Profile of Mr Kiyoshi Hirao

Kiyoshi Hirao is a practising barrister and solicitor in Japan with 12 years’ experience; his main area of interest is the rights of children. He is a member of the committee of rights of children at Daini Tokyo Bar Association and sat as chairman of the committee in 2011. He is also a member of the committee of rights of children at Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) since 2009. He started giving anti-bullying lectures to elementary and junior high school students nine years ago: focusing on the telling them about the negative impacts of bullying. Mr Hirao joined the Human Rights Centre of the University of Essex in October 2012 on the recommendation of the JFBA.
