Announcing the new Daiwa Scholars 2021, Jason James, Director General of The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, said:
“We held Zoom interviews on 5 March and selected four new recipients of Daiwa Scholarships in Japanese Studies, which support postgraduates in this field. Part of these interviews takes place in Japanese, which must be daunting for the candidates! There were several historians this year, with Scholars researching topics ranging from poor-relief activities by mediaeval Japanese religious institutions, to the impact of discussions about the British House of Lords on its Japanese equivalent during the inter-War period.”

“Then on 17 March, again by Zoom, we held final interviews for our flagship Daiwa Scholarship programme, selecting six. This programme welcomes candidates from any field other than Japanese studies, so the new Scholars covered a typically wide range – a music technologist, a materials scientist, drug trial quality assurance manager, a financial journalist, and budding academics in art/archaeology and comparative literature.
We look forward to supporting all of them during their Scholarships, and will follow their careers thereafter with great interest.”
