Carl Randall's 'Hibakusha Portraits' on display at UCL Museum on 18 and 19 June

Categorised under: ,

Carl Randall’s ‘Hibakusha Portraits’ (a series of 6 drawings of survivors of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima), are now part of the permanent collection of University College London Museum.  The drawings were inspired by John Hersey’s book ‘Hiroshima’, in which the American journalist interviewed 6 survivors just after the atomic bomb was dropped. Carl’s set of 6 portraits are intended as a visual equivalent of Hersey’s documentary account. They are being exhibited at University College London Museum on 18 and 19 June (1pm to 5pm)  as part of the museum’s permanent collection.

UCL Museum has an extensive collection of work by other Slade alumni such as Stanley Spencer, Augustus John, Edwardo Paolozzi and Paula Rego, all of whom who have shaped contemporary British painting. The collection also includes work by art historically significant artists such as Rembrandt, Turner, Rubens and Holbein.

The set of drawings were made when Carl was invited to be artist in residence in Hiroshima city in 2006, for the exhibition ‘Hiroshima Art Document’ (an annual exhibition held in the city marking the anniversary of the event of August 1945). The works were also previously exhibited at 2012 The Royal Society of Portrait Painters Exhibition, The Mall Galleries, London.

It is unusual for the portraits to be on display.

Ordinarily Carl’s drawings can be viewed by making an appointment with the Museum, and can be viewed online on the ‘Eldery People’ section of Carl’s website: Carl Randall website
