Carl Randall's new painting of Miho No Matsubara
Categorised under: Scholarships
Daiwa Scholarship alumnus and artist Carl Randall was recently commissioned by The Shizuoka City Tokaido Hiroshige Museum of Art in Japan to make an oil painting of ‘Miho No Matsubara’ for their permanent collection.
‘Miho No Matsubara’ is an area is outstanding natural beauty in Shizuoka prefecture – a beach and pine forest near Mount Fujii, listed as a World Heritage site in 2014. It was originally depicted by the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printmaker Ando Hiroshige in 1858.
The Museum commissioned Carl to make a contemporary depiction of the place in his style. The commission was made after Carl’s 2014 solo exhibition ‘Portraits from Edo to the Present’ at the Museum, where his ‘Tokaido Highway’ paintings were displayed alongside Hiroshige’s series of the same route. Carl’s new oil painting joins an extensive collection of Hiroshige’s original woodblock prints in the Museums collection, which can be viewed upon visiting.
