Categorised under: ,

An exhibition of traditional and innovative maki-e artworks by Shokan Matsuda and some of his followers will be held in the Old College Library at the Chelsea College of Art and Design from 4th-20th July.

Matsuda is a renowned Japanese maki-e lacquer artisan who uses both traditional and experimental approaches to apply maki-e to everyday objects in order to transform them. He himself founded the Maki-e Studio SHOKAN in Tokyo in 2005 to pass on the ancient techniques and to ensure that the beauty of maki-e will be appreciated by the world for many years to come.

As well as this exhibition, a series of maki-e workshops will be hosted by Matsuda and some of his apprentices at various times and locations, at which the participants will be able to create maki-e pieces to take home with them.
