Japanese Wooden Temple Gate at Dorich House Museum, Kingston University
Categorised under: Art & Exhibitions
Architecture students from Kingston University have designed and built a temporary five metre tall wooden structure, which is a 1:5 scale interpretation of the Temple Gate from Todaiji Nandaimon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nara.
The students were led by tutors Takeshi Hayatsu and Simon Jones as part of a year-long live project, in which they visited Nara to study the temple and the contemporary practice of Miyadaiku in November 2014. Altogether 22 undergraduate architecture students prefabricated the temple within two weeks this February, and finally assembled the temple in one week this May.
Originally scheduled to be open throughout June 2015, Kingston University has extended the opening of the temple to the public until November 2015. So visit it while you still have the chance!
