Jiro Takamatsu Exhibition
Categorised under: Art & Exhibitions, Events
From 11 June-20 July 2013, the Stephen Friedman Gallery will be hosting an exhibition of the works of Jiro Takamatsu, a celebrated Japanese artist. It will showcase his paper works, many of which have not been seen before, alongside many of his other most celebrated series such as his famous ‘Shadow Paintings’ (first exhibited 1967-1997).
Takamatsu had a career spanning 30 years and was a well renowned creator of Japanese avant-garde art. His ‘Shadow Paintings’ in particular have been celebrated due to the haunting sense of enigma and mystery they create with the idea of invisibility and absence.
As well as this most famous series, the exhibition will include works from sketches showcasing Takamatsu’s artistic development to other series of his such as ‘Light and Shadow’ and ‘Pole of Wave’. Each series is very different, moving from pieces which expose the artistic processes and give a glimpse into the life of the artist, to pieces which ask for public participation in order to see the full picture, meaning each person leaves having had a unique experience.
This exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue of essays by curator, Rachel Taylor.
The Gallery is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 11am-5pm
