Naoko Miyazaki Exhibition at artsdepot, 9 May to 14 July 2013
Categorised under: Art & Exhibitions
Born in Japan in 1975, Naoko Miyazaki moved to the UK in 1999, to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. She studied at the Chelsea University of Arts, and stayed in London where she energetically continued producing and exhibiting work. On 28 April 2011 Naoko Miyazaki, aged just 35, was involved in a tragic traffic accident in London.
Now, a selection of the late artist’s work is displayed together for the first time in this unique exhibition at artsdepot. The exhibition features works created from paper, including a beautiful hanging staircase and the delicate folded origami piece Geometrical Lyricism for which Miyazaki won the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2010.
Miyazaki developed her personal and unique style, mostly working with paper, the most pure and intimate material she could think of. She said: “Paper is a delicate existence, half solid and half air, or you may say it is mostly air held by fibres. I feel perhaps, paper connects our tangible world and the world of the invisible and unknown – a connection between physical and spiritual.”
