a thousand hours, Alan Cristea Gallery , Saturday 6 October to Saturday 10 November 2012, 31 Cork Street, London
The ceramicist and author Edmund de Waal OBE is currently exhibiting at Alan Cristea gallery until 10 November. This exhibition takes its central concept of vitrines from a theme in the artist’s award winning family memoir The Hare with Amber Eyes which was published in 2010 (Chatto & Windus). Professor de Waal was a Daiwa Scholar in 1991 and is now one of the leading ceramics artists in the world. He has exhibited, amongst many others, at Waddesdon Manor, the Victoria & Albert Museum, Kettle’s Yard, Tate Britain and MIMA.
The artist writes eloquently of this exhibition:
“a thousand hours has at its heart a meditation on time, both the time it takes to make something, and the time it takes to see something. All of the installations in the exhibition, made over a long year at my wheel, are groups of porcelain vessels brought together to slow down time. They are my attempt to hold time in one space and in one moment of stillness.”
