Noh Training Project UK: workshop at Reading University, 19 August to 6 September 2013
Noh Training Project UK is a unique three-week workshop offering intensive, performance-based training in the dance, chant, music and performance history of Japanese classical Noh drama.
Daily workshops will take place on Reading University’s very own Noh stage, situated in a brand new theatre, film and television building.
Led by Noh specialist Richard Emmert, the workshop will provide a comprehensive practical insight into classical Japanese noh performance. Noh, one of the oldest continuing stage arts, combines highly stylized dance, chant, music, mask, story and costume with intense inner concentration and physical discipline, creating a uniquely powerful theatrical experience.
This workshop will focus on music (hayashi), movement (kata) and voice (utai) – the essential building blocks of Noh performance. Participants will gain an understanding of Noh’s form and structure through daily guided practical sessions, demonstrations, and screenings. We will also have the opportunity to work with noh masks, and to find out more about noh costumes, dramatic structure and writing.
The Project is open to anyone with an interest in Noh, from complete beginners to those with more experience. Actors, directors, dancers, musicians, students and academics interested in extending their performance skills are encouraged to apply.
No prior experience of noh or Japanese language is required, but participants would benefit from some prior music or performance experience.
