Ship of the Ryukyu present Okinawan dance at Lilian Baylis Studio, on 1 March 2013 at 7:00pm
Ship of the Ryukyu is a collective of singers and dancers led by 7 young directors from Okinawa. The company was formed to help to develop an interest in Okinawa’s vast heritage and to introduce the world to Okinawa’s wonderful culture.
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and East China Sea, Okinawa developed its own distinctive form of dance and music; a graceful portrayal of the warmth and beauty of the Southern Islands.
Performed within the palace walls, this was a world of hidden emotions expressed through restrained movement and solemn music.
The dances are performed by an all-male cast in the spirit of the Dynastic Period.
Supported by A Thousand Cranes, Yellow Earth Theatre, Lilian Baylis Studio
This one-off performance is free to attend but booking is essential. To reserve tickets, please email your name and number of tickets required to ryukyuinfo@gmail.com, or fill in the form on the website.
