Shun Ito's Cosmic Birds in Birmingham, 2 to 20 May 2016

Categorised under: ,

Exhibited as part of the International Dance Exchange Festival Birmingham 2016, gravity, movement and light are explored in Cosmic Birds, the mesmerising series of performing kinetic sculptures by Japanese artist Shun Ito from 2 to 20 May 2016. The exhibition in Birmingham will also premiere Ito’s dramatic new installation Cells, a giant mobile made up of over 200 rotating steel rings and 30 light bulbs. While studying graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Ito developed a keen interest in theatrical art and physical expression. Consciousness of gravity which he gained through his dance experience became the main theme of his sculptures. Combinations of light and accelerations of movement create complicated rhythms producing a great variety of colours and shapes that Ito explores in his poetic creations. By blending science with the natural world, his art unfolds into an atmospheric spectacle that draws on the impermanence of the existence.
