The 2019 Daiwa Scholars in Japanese Studies

Categorised under:

The four 2019 Daiwa Scholars in Japanese Studies will embark on their chosen university courses, supported by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, from September. One will pursue a PhD at Cambridge, with a particular focus on pre-modern women’s writing, at the intersection between the act of writing, and what they wrote, exploring ideas of femininity.

Another will begin an MSc in Japanese Studies at Oxford, exploring the author Mitsuyo Kakuta’s depiction of the family unit and positioning her work alongside her contemporaries and in the sociocultural context of modern-day Japan.

The two other Scholars will study in Japan: one will start a Master of Arts and Sciences course at Tokyo University, exploring anime and manga, and the other will pursue an MA at Ritsumeikan University, investigating the relationship between environmentally beneficial government policies and the pursuit of economic growth.

Announcing the new Daiwa Scholars in Japanese Studies, Jason James, Director General of The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, said:

“These four scholars are already experts in Japan and the Japanese language. We are proud to support them in their further researches, which will further deepen our understanding of various aspects of Japan, and we hope that some of them will remain in academia and transmit their knowledge of Japan to future generations of students.”
