Visitors will be able to watch how a master ‘suri-shi’ builds up layers of different colours onto the woodcut.
The woodcut used will be Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. A limited number of visitors will have the chance of printing for themselves. The process of making woodcut prints will also be explained.

About the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints
The Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints is currently the last existing institution of its kind that functions as a publishing house of traditional woodcut printing where producers, carvers and printers work under one roof.
They have worked to preserve the techniques which have been passed down through generations of artists and craftsmen, many of whom are progressing in age.
Adachi agitates for the educating and training of young apprentices to ensure a survival of this traditional art form. Its mission is to preserve and advance the technology of woodcut printing by producing print works by contemporary artists such as Akira Yamaguchi as well as reproducing older works by masters of the Edo period.
In our fast-changing and globalised society, we are witnessing a new turning point in the development of Ukiyo-e.
As part of the ICN’s NPO Hexaproject, workshops, gallery talks and lectures on the importance of the preservation of Ukiyo-e woodcut printing will be on offer in collaboration with renowned institutions and academics during Asian Art in London, 1-10 November 2012.
Other woodcut printing workshops include:
Friday, 2 November, 4:30-6:30pm at The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts
Saturday, 3 November, 1:30pm arrival for 2:00-4:00pm at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation (RSVP needed)
Sunday, 4 November at the Victoria & Albert Museum: a talk on Ukiyo-e by Dr Monika Hinkel (SOAS/V&A) 1:00-2:00pm will be followed by a live demonstration and workshop from 2:00-3:30pm.
