International Dimensions in Funding for the Arts: the UK and Japan

Daiwa Foundation Japan House

Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation

Effectively facilitating international collaboration and exchange in the arts is but one of the many challenges facing policy makers and funding bodies, both in the UK and Japan. In examining the experience of museums in both countries, this seminar considered the role of government and business in supporting the arts and looked particularly to the involvement of Japanese newspapers, like the Asahi Shimbun, in sponsoring international exhibitions, both at home and abroad. Since 2004, the Asahi Shimbun has undertaken two major sponsorship collaborations with the British Museum: the creation of the new Asahi Shimbun Gallery; and the successful touring exhibition inJapan, Treasures from the World’s Cultures: The British Museum after 250 Years, which commemorated the newspaper’s 125th anniversary.

Organised in association with The Japan Society.
