Celebrating Tanabata at Rich Mix on Saturday 8 July 2017
For one night only, from 7pm on Saturday 8 July, Rich Mix is going Japanese! Rhythm Passport will bring sounds, rhythms, colours and food from Japan to London’s East End. Rich Mix will celebrate Tanabata – the ‘Star Festival’ of Japan – commemorating the meeting of deities Orihime and Hikoboshi. Just once a year, on the 7th day of 7th month, people celebrate this festival by writing their wishes on small pieces of paper called ‘tanzaku’ and hanging them on bamboo.
The night will be centred around music, performed by both traditional and contemporary Japanese artists. You will have the opportunity to enjoy the performances of traditional London-based duo Hibiki Ichikawa & Akari Mochizuki, as well as the contemporary stylings of French-Japanese artist Maïa Barouh. Also lined up are Koichi Sakai, Shibaura Soundsystem and SOAS Radio DJs to DJ, bringing their unique J-grooves to the dancefloor.
After you’ve satisfied your hunger for new music, you can take care of your appetite for food with an authentic Japanese feast! And of course, Tanabata wouldn’t be complete without beautiful festival decor.
Tickets cost from £10.50 to £15.00
