Daiwa Foundation funds projects ranging from fish rubbing to neuromuscular disorders

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation has published details of grants awarded to support UK-Japan projects in its latest funding round (September 2017). The Foundation will support artists Eleanor Morgan and Sam Curtis to travel to Japan to enhance their skills in “gyotaku” or fish rubbing, after which they will run workshops in London to encourage people to learn about ocean ecology. Academics will travel between Nagoya University and Newcastle University, investigating the genes causing Congenital Myastenic Syndrome, an inherited neuromuscular disorder. A filmmaker from Newcastle University and a researcher from Teesside University will travel to Japan to study the manga industry, disseminating findings through a documentary film and academic papers. The Foundation will also support Sarah Phillips and Caroline Osborne’s visit to Japan to develop resources on Japanese art for the new Art History A-Level, which includes works by Japanese artists and architects.

Daiwa Foundation Awards are for large-scale collaborations between British and Japanese institutions. Four professors from the National Museum of Japanese History will travel to the National Museum Wales, researching and giving lectures in connection with Japan: Past to Present, a major exhibition in 2018 combining Japanese artworks from Japanese and Welsh collections. The Foundation will also support collaborative research by academics at the University of Manchester, the University of Hokkaido and Chester Zoo, who want to know if courtship songs of the Java sparrow change in captivity, in which case released birds may fail to find mates in the wild. Five academics from the University of East Anglia will travel to Japan to further UK-Japan collaboration in dementia care, including a two-day seminar organised with Osaka University.
