400 years of Japanese music: the koto and its friends - concert on 4 March and talk on 6 March
A renowned koto performer is visiting London as a Cultural Envoy from Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs and will be holding a concert and giving a talk in March. Toshiko YONEKAWA (koto 13-string zither) is from a family lineage of koto masters, she has performed in over 15 countries as a Japan Cultural Envoy
1) concert: Monday 4 March, 8pm, SOAS, Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre – FREE ENTRY

• from a family lineage of koto masters, she has performed in over 15 countries as a Japan Cultural Envoy
• plays pieces from the 17th century onwards
• and has composed new pieces, including one for koto and viola that will be heard at this concert
with Mari Kamegawa (shamisen 3-string lute), Clive Bell (shakuhachi bamboo flute), & Wenhan Jiang (viola)

2) Wednesday 6 March, 8-9pm (SOAS room G52):
Yonekawa-san will offer an introduction to the koto: a mini-lecture-demonstration including a chance for a brief hands-on experience!
Entry for both events is free, but G52 on Wednesday only has space for 40 people; you can guarantee a place at either event by emailing dh6@soas.ac.uk
