Daiwa Foundation funds projects ranging from scientific research inspired by trembling leaves to  intergenerational dementia care

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation has published details of its Small Grants and Awards awarded to support UK-Japan projects in its latest funding round (March 2019). The PDF list can be found via this link.

The National Videogame Foundation received a grant to support an upcoming exhibition on ‘Famicom’ gamepad controllers. Masayuki Uemura, the former Head of Research and Development at Nintendo who designed the ‘Famicom’, and colleagues from Ritsumeikan Centre for Game Studies will travel to Sheffield to co-curate the exhibition and contribute to exhibition-related events. Tokyo Medical and Dental University will use a grant to support a research trip to Ulster University to collaborate with colleagues investigating the role of intergenerational care and social interaction as a way of addressing the needs of people with dementia alongside pre-school or crèche facilities. The Foundation will support Teesside University, enabling the manga artist and anime producer Harumo Sanazaki to participate in the conference “Shakespeare and the Visual Imagination” and exhibit her work at two exhibitions on Shakespeare, one focusing on illustration in his plays and the other exploring Shakespeare in objects.

Among larger institutional collaborations funded by the Foundation is an Award to Collaborative Lesson Research, an independent group of maths educators dedicated to improving student learning and teaching practices. An aim of theirs is to equip key UK stakeholders with direct experience of Lesson Study and curriculum knowledge in Japan and for this knowledge to be brought to the attention of UK policy-makers at a dissemination seminar at Nottingham University. The University of Warwick has received funding to support reciprocal visits with researchers from Hokkaido University to establish a large-scale collaboration into aeroelastic energy harvesters; an exciting and promising technology for powering wireless sensors, inspired by the trembling of aspen leaves in barely noticeable winds.

Background information:

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation is a UK charity, established in 1988 with a generous benefaction from Daiwa Securities Co Ltd. The Foundation’s purpose is to support closer links between Great Britain and Japan. It does this by awarding grants and scholarships in all fields of activity; by supporting educational exchanges and other bilateral initiatives between British and Japanese academics and students; and by organising a year-round events’ programme at Daiwa Foundation Japan House in London to increase understanding of Japan in the UK. The Foundation is represented in Japan by its Tokyo office. Further information about the Foundation and its activities is available at www.dajf.org.uk
