Categorised under: Art & Exhibitions, Education, Events, Music, Theatre & Film
The BBC Symphony Orchestra is presenting a day of Japanese music on Saturday 2 February at the Barbican in London – Total Immersion: Sounds from Japan. This is part of a long-running series of Total Immersion days. These days usually celebrate the music of a single composer. They are branching out this year and looking at music from a specific country.
Total Immersion: Sounds from Japan is a day of music and film, focusing on the great Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, including a film about the composer and a documentary about his film music. There are three concerts including music by Takemitsu and some of the younger generations of Japanese composers, including UK premieres of works by Dai Fujikura and Toshio Hosakowa. Another concert includes traditional music from Japan. The evening concert in the Barbican Hall will be conducted by Kazushi Ono and feature Kifu Mitsuhashi (shakuhachi) and Kumiko Shutou (biwa).
There is also a concert at the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s home, Maida Vale Studios, on the evening of 31 January of traditional Japanese music with Kifu Mitsuhashi and Kumiko Shutou, and this is free to attend.
Full details of the day can be found here.
