Uncertain Futures: The Individual, Society and the State in the UK and Japan
13/14 Cornwall Terrace, Outer Circle (entrance facing Regent's Park), London NW1 4QP
Organised by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation
This year-long seminar series focuses upon current public policy debates in the UK and Japan. In the wake of the global financial crisis and political change, both governments are addressing the management of financial deficits whilst reviewing public spending priorities. The launch of ‘The Big Society’ in 2010 by the British government has drawn attention to the relationship between individuals, society and the state and to changing patterns of trust and responsibility. The series will explore the challenges for public policy in the UK and Japan by considering economic issues and social welfare needs; concerns about healthcare, education and employment; ageing societies and pension reform; support for culture and the arts; and the role of the charity sector in uncertain times.
