Elemental Journey – An Artist Residency in Japan

In March 2017 British contemporary artist Amanda Chambers travelled to Japan for a one-month residency in ceramics at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park in Shiga Prefecture, to develop her growing interest in clay. This talk, illustrated with images from the residency, highlighted some of the key themes that emerged in Chambers’ works, and it was accompanied by a temporary exhibition of selected ceramic works which were the result of her stay.

The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and QUEENS, indoor ice rink, was delighted to offer this unique figure skating workshop with four-time Japanese National Champion and three-time World Championship medallist Fumie Suguri. She shared her skating brilliance with adults and children, from beginners to advanced skaters.

To Pick Up the Shadow - A Photography Workshop by Toshiaki Hicosaka

Photography captures images of the world through the use of light. Could the shadows also create a visual experience – one that does not appear under the light? This workshop invites you to take photos in central London at night using a unique and somewhat unorthodox method. Workshop participants are asked to bring their own digital camera that has a flash function.

Yuka Takechi has forged a unique career as a composer at the highest level, creating new classical music for Japanese traditional music and its instruments. In this talk, Takechi introduced her works by using video and audio materials and considered the potential of Japanese traditional music, its creativity and its future. Takechi was joined by award-winning violinist Midori Komachi, who performed a selection of Takechi’s original pieces for violin.

Zazen Meditation: Workshop and Practice
