March 11th and Beyond, by Ambassador Keiichi Hayashi

In this special lecture, seven months after the 11th of March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Ambassador Hayashi examined the impact of the disaster and Japan’s progress in the reconstruction effort to help rebuild the lives of people in the affected areas.

The Light Field

One of the attractions of Ohba’s art is his use of iridescent pearl paint, ever-changing image shifts and colour transition as the light varies or as the viewer moves. The English-Language Press Networks of East Asia, 1918-1945

English-language newspapers such as the Japan Advertiser, North-China Daily News, Japan Chronicle, China Press, Japan Times, and Seoul Press occupied a vital segment of the public sphere in East Asia in the first half of the 20th century. As forums of opinion on Japanese, Chinese and Western interests in East Asia they also served as vehicles of propaganda, particularly during the crisis-ridden 1930s and the Pacific War.

Crisis Management and Prevention in Japan: Lessons for the Future

Energy shortages and the implications for industry and the economy mirror the experience of the Japanese oil shocks of the 1970s and are turning attention to aspects of risk and crisis management.

Healthcare Provision and Management in the UK and Japan

This fifth seminar in the 2011 series considered the issues surrounding healthcare provision and management in the UK and Japan. This is a highly topical area for debate in the UK as spending cuts and healthcare reforms focus attention on the ways in which the NHS must adapt to changing times. The Japanese health service is facing similar difficulties as Japan’s ageing population and low birth rate impact upon healthcare needs and provision.
