Kara Juul

Kara Juul was awarded a BSc (Hons) in Business Studies and Japanese by Cardiff University in 2013. During her BSc she spent a year at Toyo University. She completed an MSc in Modern Japanese at the University of Oxford in 2015 and was upgraded to an MPhil which she undertook at St Antony’s College, University of Oxford with a Daiwa Scholarship in Japanese Studies. Her research explored how self-efficacy (SE) interacts with gender to affect Japanese girls’ mathematics scores on the OECD’s PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) tests. Research shows that girls typically have lower SE than boys.

Kara’s MPhil dissertation will form the groundwork for her subsequent DPhil research which she commenced in September 2016.

Warren Stanislaus

Warren Stanislaus was awarded a BA in Japan Studies by International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo in 2011. He subsequently completed an MPhil in Modern Japanese Studies at the University of Oxford in 2013. Warren is currently working at the Rebuild Japan Initiative Foundation (RJIF), a Tokyo-based think tank, where he is Research Assistant to the Chairman, Dr Yoichi Funabashi. Warren intended to combine his work at RJIF with a PhD at Waseda University, funded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, which he commenced in April 2016. He proposed to examine Japan’s cultural diplomacy and the interaction between soft power and hard power in the Asia-Pacific region.

We regret to say that in August 2016 Warren withdrew from the PhD for personal reasons and the Scholarship was rescinded.

In July 2019, Warren – currently a DPhil History candidate at the University of Oxford – received the Rare Rising Stars award.  He was named 3rd in the 2019 Rare Rising Stars awards ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster.
