After the tsunami: lessons from Japan in overcoming natural disasters
Daiwa Foundation Japan House
the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation 主催
The Indian Ocean tsunami occurred less than a month before the tenth anniversary of the Hanshin earthquake that destroyed much ofKobe. In the aftermath of the tsunami, there has been analysis and discussion ofJapan’s response to the threat of natural disasters. With its capital city being four times more at risk than any other major conurbation in the world, Japanese research and development in earthquake detection technology is attracting international attention. This seminar offered scientists, the media, and government and NGO officials the opportunity to take stock and to reflect on how the Japanese experience could inform future planning and policy-making.
