Japan’s period of low economic growth continues, despite the government’s best efforts to provide stimulus to the economy. The country’s ageing and shrinking population are two of the main obstacles to achieving sustained growth.
In this seminar, chaired by Dr Linda Yueh, Oxford and London Business School economist, Yuko Kawai of the Bank of Japan described the current state of the Japanese economy and will explain the government’s approaches to addressing the challenges that it faces. Bill Emmott, the former Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, analysed how Japan’s economy may benefit from an increase in female labour participation, not in its quantity but its quality. Dr Yuko Oda, of Hitotsubashi University, discussed the limitations to the government’s intentions of encouraging a more active role for women in the economy.

Dr Linda Yueh
Dr Linda Yueh (Chair) is Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University, and Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School. She is also a Visiting Senior Fellow at LSE IDEAS, the foreign policy think tank based at the London School of Economics, and was previously a Visiting Professor of Economics at Peking University. Dr Yueh is a broadcaster and was formerly the BBC’s Chief Business Correspondent. She is the editor of the Routledge Economic Growth and Development Series and her latest book is The Great Economists: How Their Ideas Can Help Us Today.
Yuko Kawai
Yuko Kawai joined the Bank of Japan in 2003, where she has had numerous roles, including as head of the Foreign Exchange Division, Chief Representative in Hong Kong and head of the FinTech Centre. She is currently the General Manager for Europe and the Bank’s Chief Representative in London. Prior to joining the Bank, Kawai worked at JPMorgan/Chase/Chemical Bank group in the financial markets division, and at RPTech, an independent think tank, as a research director. She received an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and an LL.B from Kyoto University.
Bill Emmott
Bill Emmott is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. He was previously the Editor-in-Chief of The Economist (1993-2006) and has written many books on Japan, the first of which was The Sun Also Sets: Why Japan Will Not Be Number One (1989). His latest book is The Fate of the West: The Battle to Save the World’s Most Successful Political Idea (2017). He is currently writing a book on the future role of women in Japan’s economy, politics and society, which will be published in Japanese by Nikkei at the end of 2018.
Dr Yumiko Oda
Dr Yumiko Oda is an Assistant Professor at Hitotsubashi University and CEO at Mind Mining Inc. At the university she focuses on marketing research and teaching and she also owns a management consulting company in Tokyo. Dr Oda has previously worked at Canon Inc., Dow Jones Japan, and Dream Incubator. She has helped female leaders at various Japanese multinational companies to develop their leadership and communication skills. She is passionate about delivering training in marketing at universities and companies. She holds a PhD from Hitotsubashi University.
