Inside Out: works by Morino

Daiwa Foundation Japan House

大和日英基金 主催

Inside Out: Works by Morino is a collection of works by innovative contemporary artist, Mayumi Morino. Coming direct from Japan, it is Morino’s first solo show in the UK. His technique is to take felt material and scorch it, giving a three-dimensional feel which accentuates the negative space created by the burnt surfaces. These heatgraphs, never seen before in the UK, contain an element of control and yet convey an over-riding sense of freedom and movement.

Morino’s early etchings were influenced by the mono-ha movement of the 1960s and 70s, which sought to incorporate natural and found objects in art. His style has gradually changed so that the creation process is visible in the final work.

“A big part of the enjoyment of my work is to see the changes that take place in the work over time and I gradually began to feel a dissatisfaction that my audiences could not participate in this change. I wanted to convey the sense of loss of space as my works progressed.” – Mayumi Morino

Mayumi Morino was born in Tokyo in 1941. He studied print making at the Print Workshop of Japan Artists Association and went on to an MA in Oriental Art History at Waseda University. He has taught art at various Japanese Universities and art schools, and is currently a Professor of Fine Art at Tama Art University. He has exhibited in various countries around the world including the USA,Yugoslavia andPuerto Rico. His major exhibitions include the first Cuba International Print Competition in Havana(1997), Millennium Graphica in Taipei and Yokohama (2000), and the seventh Nippon International Contemporary Art Festival, Tokyo International Forum.
