Omen by Guy Mayman
13/14 Cornwall Terrace, Outer Circle (entrance facing Regent's Park), London NW1 4QP
大和日英基金 主催
‘Omen’ is a collection of new works by Guy Mayman, a former Daiwa Scholar.
Drawing on the Japanese word for mask, the works present familiar, everyday images in a new perspective.
Strong primary colours disguise conventional viewpoints and bring new meanings to the fore. Some of the works are instantly recognisable; others take time to reveal themselves.
The result is a striking collection of works that challenges the viewer’s perception of the true meaning of everyday objects.
‘Using visual materials collected from disparate sources, these collages are the result of drawing, cutting and a desire to make compelling and contradictory images. Accessible yet strange, both sweet and menacing: these small totems could portend good or evil.’ – Guy Mayman
Guy Mayman studied at Central St Martins School of Art & Design and De Ateliers in Amsterdam. He was was a Daiwa Scholar from 2000 to 2001 and remained in Tokyo until last year. His most recent exhibitions were at Kojimachi and Mizuma galleries in Tokyo and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth, New Zealand. ‘Omen’ is his first exhibition since his return to the UK.
