Tokyo Eyes: Sequel by Tomoko Suzuki

Tokyo Eyes: Sequel is a follow-up to Tomoko’s April 2000 exhibition at Daiwa Foundation Japan House, Tokyo Eyes: Cornwall’s Gardens and is adapted from Tomoko’s recent Tokyo show, Colour Harmony: from an English garden to a Japanese tea garden.

Nanga: new paintings by Peter Cavaciuti

Nanga was originally the preserve of the Chinese scholar-gentry class but in Japan it was re-interpreted by artists of different social classes so that the designs became bolder, freer and more playful than those found in China.

Osaka Urban Metabolism

In spring 2003, a selected group of students visited Osaka to assess the area immediately north of Osaka Station. This 24 hectare area in Umeda district is due for redevelopment and will probably be the last project of its type and scale in Japan. The students undertook their own survey of the site and the surrounding area, and developed solutions for regenerating Umeda and also ideas for the improving the quality of life in central Osaka.

Bite-Size: Miniature Textiles from Japan and the UK

This exhibition of contemporary textile artists from Japan and the UK celebrated fifteen years of collaborative activity. It featured artists who have taken part in key projects, including the leading Japanese textile artists, Reiko Sudo and Shihoko Fukumoto.

This was a chance to meet photographer Robert Whitaker, the only person allowed to take photographs of the Beatles on their flights and in their hotel room during their 3 intense days performing in Tokyo. His photographs provided a unique record of their three intense days on tour in Tokyo (June 1966).

CROSS CURRENTS: glasswork and ceramics by Keiko Mukaide and Simon Ward

A private viewing which exhibited the glass and ceramic work of Keiko Mukaide and Simon Ward by Cross Currents, and examined the cultural differences and similarities of two artists from opposite sides of the world. With a myriad of experience of living and working in both Japan and the UK, the exhibition visually explored fragments of their shared narrative and the sympathies and contrasts between their island cultures.
