States in Change: National Identity in the UK and Japan

This year-long seminar series explored the concept of national identity with respect to changing societies in the UK and Japan. Individual seminars looked at the role of politicians, educationalists and the media in shaping debates on nationality and culture. The series juxtaposed perspectives from Britain and Japan on political change and national identity; on nationhood and nationalism; immigrants, minorities and multiculturalism; class, social mobility and social divides; and gender issues. The concluding seminar focussed on the place of Britain and Japan in the wider world.
