Daiwa Scholars 1992

Daiwa Scholars 1992 completed their Scholarship in April 1994.

Between them, the seven Daiwa Scholars 1992 studied at seven different universities from across the UK. Their studies encompassed Jewellery Making; Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE); History; Natural Sciences; Engineering Sciences; and Electronic Engineering.

About the scholars

Sarah Aderonke ADENLE

Sarah Aderonke Adenle was awarded a B.A (HONS) in Jewellery Studies by Central St Martins College of Art and Design in 1990, followed by an M.A (HONS) in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery by the Royal College of Art in 1992.  At the time of applying for the Scholarship she was particularly interested in the arts and crafts of Japan, and Japanese skill and craftsmanship.

During her time in Japan, Ronke’s homestay was in Kushiro City in Hokkaido, and her work placements were in the studio of the Japanese jeweller Professor Reiko Yamada and at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Ruth DODSWORTH

Ruth Dodsworth was awarded a B.A (HONS) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics by Oriel College, Oxford in 1992.  At the time of applying for the Scholarship she wished to gain a first hand experience of Japanese culture in order to help her in pursuing a multi-national career.

Ruth’s homestay in Japan was in Akita City in Akita Prefecture. Her work placement was in the office of Mr Koichi Kato, a Japanese politician.

After completing the Scholarship she joined the police force and is currently a Chief Inspector.

Jerome RANAWAKE

Jerome Ranawake was awarded a B.A (HONS) in History by Clare College, Cambridge in 1992. His interest in Japan was sparked after taking a course examining development contrasts between Japan and the West.

Jerome’s homestay in Japan was in Niigata City in Niigata Prefecture. His work placement was at the Yomiuri Shimbun, writing articles in Japanese for the daily edition of the newspaper.

He is now a partner in financing and capital markets at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP Law Practice in New York City.

Saul RUBIN

Saul Rubin was awarded a B.A (HONS) in Natural Sciences by Queens’ College, Cambridge, in 1992. He was interested in Japan particularly due to its industrial influence.

Saul’s homestay in Japan was in Fukushima City in Fukushima Prefecture. His work placement was at Sankei Shimbun, where he wrote articles in Japanese for various editions of the newspaper.

He is now a Specialist Autos Fund Manager at Silverstone Capital LLP.

Christopher SWORDS

Christopher Swords was awarded a B.A. (HONS) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics by Balliol College, Oxford, in 1991, followed by an M.A (HONS) in Social and Political Thought by the University of Sussex in 1992.  At the time of applying for the Scholarship he was particularly interested in aiming for an improved understanding between European and Japanese societies.

Christopher’s homestay in Japan was in Koriyama City in Fukushima Prefecture. His work placement was with the national broadcaster NHK Television,  working on radio and TV current affairs.

He is currently Director for Finance and Operations for ITV Broadcasting and Online.

Michael THORPE

Michael Thorpe was awarded a B.Eng (HONS) in Engineering Science by the University of Exeter in 1987. Subsequently he worked for four years at the Nissan European Technology Centre in the UK. Having already visited Japan on an exchange scheme for engineering undergraduates, he wished to contribute to European-Japanese relations.

Michael’s homestay in Japan was in Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture. His work placements were at the Asia Research Institute and at the Ministry for International Trade and Industry.

He is currently an Engineer for Nihon Parametric Technology KK.

Helen WAITE

Helen Waite was awarded a B.Eng (HONS) in Electronic Engineering by the University of Sheffield in 1992. She became particularly interested in learning the Japanese language and culture after training in the Electronics Research Laboratory in Kobe, and traveling around Japan.

Helen’s homestay in Japan was in Yamagata City in Yamagata Prefecture. Her work placement was in the Planning Department of the semi-conductor division of NEC in Tokyo.

She is currently Principal Engineer at Huawei Technologies in France.
