Daiwa Scholars 2007

Daiwa Scholars 2007 completed the programme in 2009.
For this year’s intake, the Foundation selected ten Scholars, two women and eight men.
In total, they have studied at nine different universities and colleges: Bristol, Cambridge, Central St Martins, Hong Kong, LSE, Nottingham, Oxford, Queen’s Belfast, and UCL.
About the scholars
Samina Bhatia
Samina has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Hertford College, University of Oxford. Prior to taking up the Scholarship she spent one month in Japan on a cultural exchange programme at Kwansei Gakuin University. She is seeking to pursue a career in international development.
Samina’s homestay in Japan was in Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture. Her work placement was at Japan Centre for Conflict Prevention. She is currently a Governance Adviser and Portfolio Development Lead for DFID.
Alex Burgues
Alex has a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering with Study in Continental Europe (with Spanish) from the University of Bristol. His interest in Japan developed from his involvement with automotive engineering and he is seeking to develop a career in the automotive research and development sector.
Alex’s homestay in Japan was in Hachijo Town in Tokyo City. His work placement was at the Honda R&D. He currently works for Ricardo.
Adrian Connolly
Adrian has a MEng degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast. As part of his degree he worked in Japan with the engineering firm Chuden CTI. He is seeking to develop his career in engineering and to eventually set up his own technology firm.
Adrian’s homestay in Japan was in Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture. His work placement was at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

Dan Hards
Dan has a degree in Fine Art from Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design. He previously visited Japan for two months and has developed links with artists there. He is seeking to pursue a career in fine art while lecturing and curating exhibitions in the UK and Japan.
Dan’s homestay in Japan was in Shinjo City in Yamagata Prefecture. His work placement was at Command N. He is currently a freelance artist and translator.
Jonathan Hill
Jonathan has a degree in Politics and East European Studies from University College London and an MSc in Global Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has a strong interest in Japanese foreign and security policies, and has worked for policy development organisations in both the UK and Asia on political conflict and terrorism related issues.
Jonathan’s homestay in Japan was in Niseko City in Hokkaido. His work placement was at Asia Forum Japan. He is currently Assistant Editor, Digital Pilots at BBC News.

Dr Cristy Ho
Cristy has a BCogSc in Cognitive Science from the University of Hong Kong, an MSc in HCI and Ergonomics from University College London, and a PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Oxford. She is seeking to conduct research in the research and development units of automobile companies in Japan.
Cristy’s homestay in Japan was in Aira City in Kagoshima Prefecture. Her work placement was at Toyota Motor Corporation.
Adam Hollis
Adam has a MEng degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Management from the University of Nottingham. He has professional links with Japanese companies and is seeking to further his career by working within an aerospace or a high technology company.
Adam’s homestay in Japan was in Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture. His work placement was at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. He is currently working for Rolls Royce in Nagoya, Japan as supplier quality and technical manager.
Barnaby Jones
Barnaby completed a BA at Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge, in English. His interests in Japan include Japanese literature, history and politics. He is seeking to develop a career in the diplomatic service.
Barnaby’s homestay in Japan was in Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture. His work placement was with MP Taro Kono.
Barnaby is currently working for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Edward Knight
Edward has a MChem degree in Chemistry from Worcester College, University of Oxford. Prior to the taking up the Scholarship he visited Japan as part of the two-week Oxford-Doshisha University sailing exchange. He is seeking to set up his own business after gaining experience in consultancy firms.
Ed’s homestay in Japan was in Azumino City in Nagano Prefecture. His work placement was at the Daiwa Institute of Research.
Ed is currently Senior Manager – Strategy and Consulting at Accenture.

Thomas Richardson
Thomas has a BA in History from Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. Prior to taking up the Scholarship he visited Japan twice. His career ambition is to work in the marketing of European companies in Asia.
Tom’s homestay in Japan was in Nagasaki City in Nagasaki Prefecture. His work placement was at Tokyo 2016 Olympic Bid Committee.
Following the Daiwa Scholarship, Tom was a WPP Fellow and worked as VP, Strategic Partnerships at Acquia WPP in the USA. He is currently based in Australia working as Managing Director, Asia-Pacific for InVision, a digital product design platform.
