Daiwa Scholars 1995

Daiwa Scholars 1995 completed their Scholarship in April 1997.
Between them, the six Daiwa Scholars 1995 studied at five different universities from across the UK. Their studies encompassed Law, Mathematics and Astronomy, Mechanical Engineering, Music and Philosophy and Physics with Medical Physics.
About the scholars
Professor Laurence Court
Laurence Court completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Physics with Medical Physics in 1992 and a PhD in Digital Mammography in 1995, both at University College London.
Laurence’s homestay in Japan was in Toyokawa City in Aichi Prefecture. His work placement was at Sony Medical Engineering Group where he was involved in computer simulations of cone-beam CT systems.
He is currently based at the Department of Radiation Physics – Patient Care, Division of Radiation Oncology, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston.
Matthew Davies
Matthew Davies completed a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield in 1994 and an MSc in Astronomy at Sussex University in 1995.
Matthew’s homestay in Japan was in Sendai City in Miyagi Prefecture. His work placement was at the University of Tokyo where he assisted in satellite research and simulation. He is currently at a Product Manager at Four Soft.
Dr Juliana Hodkinson
Juliana Hodkinson completed a BA (Hons) degree in Music and Philosophy at King’s College, University of Cambridge in 1992. Since 1993 she has continued her composition studies part-time in the UK and in Denmark.
Juliana’s homestay in Japan was in Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Her work placement was at the Gagaku Society.
Following the Scholarship she studied for a PhD from the University of Copenhagen on the subject of silence in music and sound art.
She has taught composition and music/media aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen, Royal Danish Academy of Music and Technische Universität Berlin, as well as giving numerous lectures and workshops in Europe. She is currently based in Germany.
Michael Reddish
Michael Reddish completed an LLB (Hons) degree in Law at Warwick University in 1995. He is planning to lecture in Oriental Legal Philosophy and Culture.
Michael’s homestay in Japan was in Komatsu City in Ishikawa Prefecture. His work placements were at the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Court of Japan. He is currently Deputy Head Academic at Princethorpe College in Warwickshire and in 2021 was appointed Deputy Principal, Harrow International School in Bangkok
William Sage
William Sage completed an LLB (Hons) degree in Law at Downing College, University of Cambrige in 1994 and an LLM in 1995.
William’s homestay in Japan was in Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture. His work placements were at the Ministry of Justice, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and Nagashima & Ohno.
He is currently Managing Director at ASIFMA in Hong Kong.

David Webster
David Webster completed a Master’s (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh in 1991 and a Master’s degree in Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in 1993. He has been working as a Project Manager at Unilever.
David’s homestay in Japan was in Sapporo City in Hokkaido. His work placement was at GK Dynamics where he was involved in motorcycle design. He is partner and executive portfolio director at IDEO in Palo Alto.
