Daiwa Scholars 2000

Daiwa Scholars 2000 completed their scholarship in April 2002.

Between them, the nine  Daiwa Scholars 2000 studied at seven universities across the UK. Their study interests encompassed Architecture, Chemistry, Fine Arts (sculpture), Glass Design, Law, Philosophy and  Social and Political Sciences – demonstrating how individuals of different backgrounds can benefit equally from the programme.http://www.dajf.org.uk/scholarships/daiwa-scholarship/scholars-experiences

About the scholars

Helen Bottomley

Helen Bottomley completed a BA degree in Glass Design at Staffordshire University.

Helen’s homestay in Japan was in Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture. Her work placement was at the Depot, where she was a gallery curator.

Helen stayed in Japan for eight years, working in gallery curation, translation and the publishing industry before returning to the UK to work at Sony Design in Europe. During her 6 years at Sony Design Centre Europe, Helen worked across a number of globally successful projects.

She is currently Senior Project Manager at Designit.

 

Christofer Bullsmith

Christofer Bullsmith completed an MPhil in Philosopy at King’s College London in 2000 and a BA degree in Philosophy at the University of Canterbury in 1997.

Chrisotfer’s homestay in Japan was in Urasoe City in Okinawa Prefecture. His work placements were at the University of Tokyo and the Japan Centre for Climate Change Actions.

Christofer is currently working for a London-based educational software company with offices across Asia, and as a freelance consultant for a few Japanese NGOs and universities.

In 2017 he was appointed  Associate Professor of English at Atomi University in  Niiza City in Saitama Prefecture.

Lankendre Chandresinghe

Lankendre Chandresinghe completed a degree in Architecture at University College London.

Luke’s  homestay in Japan was in Yamaguchi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture. His work placement was with Koh Kitayama at the Architecture Workshop.

With his wife in 2012, he established  Undercover Architecture Ltd.

Elizabeth Davidson

Elizabeth Davidson completed a BA degree in Social and Political Sciences at New Hall, University of Cambridge.

Liz’s work placement in Japan was in Miyazaki City in Miyazaki Prefecture. Her work placements were at the Institute of Cultural Affairs and the Japan Centre for Conflict Prevention.

Since completing the Daiwa Scholarship in 2002, Liz completed an MSc in Violence, Conflict and Development at the School of Oriental and African Studies and worked in a variety of roles across the British Civil Service.

From 2007 to 2008, she was a senior policy advisor in the G20 Secretariat at the Brazilian Ministry of Finance. On her return from Brazil, she took on a series of senior roles in HM Treasury and the Home Office.

Liz returned to Brasilia in July 2017 as Deputy Head of the British Embassy. In September 2020 she became Acting Ambassador to Brazil.

In August 2021, she was appointed Deputy Director, English Regions Strategy and Performance. In July 2022 she took on the role of  Director, Defence Afghan Relocation and Resettlement Director, at the Ministry of Defence.

Ruth Hill

Ruth Hill completed a degree in Law at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge.

Ruth’s homestay in Japan was in Mihama Town in Aichi Prefecture. Her work placement was at the JAWOC – Japan Organizing Committee for 2002 FIFA World Cup.

She is currently SEVIS Compliance Coordinator at Boise State University.

Guy Mayman

Guy Mayman completed a degree in Fine Arts (sculpture) at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design.

Guy’s homestay in Japan was in Sapporo City in Hokkaido. His work placement was with Nanjo and Associates (Yokohama Triennale). He is now a visiting lecturer of Art in the University of Chester.

Jem Stevens

Jem Stevens completed a degree in Law with French Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Jem’s homestay in Japan was in Tomigusuku City in Okinawa Prefecture. Her work placements were at the Japan Civil Liberties Union, TBS and the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.

Jem currently lives in Germany.

Edward Wright

Dr Edward Wright completed a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at Trinity College, University of Cambridge and completed a BSc degree in Chemistry at Merton College, University of Oxford.

Ed’s homestay in Japan was in Kagoshima City in Kagoshima Prefecture. His work placement was at the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association.

He is currently Head of Specialty Care Business Unit at Bayer in Tokyo.
