Daiwa Scholars 2009

The Foundation is delighted to announce Daiwa Scholars 2009.

In total, they have studied at five different universities: Bath, Birmingham, Cambridge, Imperial College and Oxford.

Their subject areas encompass Archaeology and Biological Anthropology; Biological Science, Mechanical Engineering, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Physics and Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Daiwa Scholars 2009 departed for Tokyo in September 2009.

About the scholars

Andy Bryant

Andy Bryant has a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath. Prior to taking up the Scholarship he was employed as an engineer and business developer at Oliver Crispin Robotics Ltd. He had a 10-week placement at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2007 and visited Tokyo again in 2009.

Andy’s homestay in Japan was in Nakatosa City in Kochi Prefecture. His work placement was at Business Development. Andy joined the Entrepreneur First (http://www.joinef.com/) scheme in September 2015 and ran his own company before returning to work for Business Development Asia in London.

Since August 2017 he has been working for bitFlyer Europe in Luxembourg, where he is now Co-Head and COO.

Jessie Cope

Jessie Cope has a degree in Biological Science from the University of Birmingham. She initially became interested in Japan through her pursuit of martial arts. She is seeking an academic career in biological research, focusing on animal cognition and behavioural ecology.

Jessie’s homestay in Japan was in Amakusa City in Kumamoto Prefecture. Her work placement was at at University of Tokyo’s Department of Cognitive and Behavioural Science;  and at JISTEC – Japan International Science and Technology Exchange Center.

In early 2015 Jessie joined the Royal Society as Scheme Manager, Grants Team. She then joined the Civil Service Fast Sream in October 2016 and is working at the FCDO.

In 2020 she took up a posting at the British Embassy in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr Edmund Harbord

Edmund Harbord was awarded a PhD in Semiconductor Physics by Imperial College in December 2008. In 2002 he had a 3-month internship with OSG, a tool manufacturing company, in Nagoya.

Ed’s homestay in Japan was in Nagasaki City in Nagasaki Prefecture. His work placement was The University of Tokyo’s Institute of Nano Quantum Information Electronics.

Having completed his JSPS Research Fellowship at the University of Tokyo, Edmund took up a Post-Doc position in November 2013 at the Centre for Quantum Photonics, University of Bristol and was appointed Lecturer in 2017.

Maxwell Irving

Maxwell Irving has a degree in Modern Languages (Spanish) and Linguistics from the University of Oxford. His interests in Japan include Japanese sociolinguistics and Japanese approaches to public administration. He is seeking to develop a career in the diplomatic service.

Max’s homestay in Japan was in Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture. His work placement was at Kono Taro MP’s office.

Max Irving is a member of the Diplomatic Service. In January 2018 he arrived in the Dominican Republic to take up the position as Deputy Head of Mission and HM Consul and HM Consul for Haiti.

He is currently First-Secretary Migration and Mobility at the UK Mission to the European Union.

James McDaid

James McDaid has a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford. He has made 4 visits to Japan since 2005 prior to taking up the Scholarship and hopes to complete a doctorate in the comparative politics of East Asia with a view to pursuing a research-related career in the private or public sectors, or in academia.

James’s homestay in Japan was at Karatsu City in Saga Prefecture. His work placement was at FTI International Risk. James is currently working at BlackRock.

In 2022 he took up a post in Tokyo as COO and Head of Strategy for BlackRock’s Wealth business in Asia-Pacific.

Dr Charlotte Payne

Charlotte Payne has a degree in Archaeology and Biological Anthropology from the University of Cambridge. She has an interest in the work of Japanese scientists in the field of primatology with whom she would like to develop links. She is seeking to pursue an academic career, studying human evolution from the perspective of field primatology.

Charlotte’s homestay in Japan was in Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Her work placement was at Kobokan Community CenterKyoto University’s Primate Research Centre’s Section of Ecology and Conservation;Wild Life Research Centre (Yakushima); and St Luke Hospital. Charlotte completed a PhD at the Department of  Zoology at the University of Cambridge, looking at the environmental, health and socio-economic impacts of insect farming. She currently works as Associate Editor for , Nature Human Behaviour.

She is  Senior Editor, Nature Human Behaviour.
