Operating out of Tokyo’s Kusoge suburb, KOSUGE1-16 is a husband-and-wife duo renowned for their adventurous and interactive art. A glance at their website yields works such as a larger-than-life table football assembly, manned by up to 12 competing children, as well as an equally impressive and interactive Scalextric-esque cycledrome.

In 1964, Tokyo held the Olympics, 24 years after it would have done, if it hadn’t been for the outbreak of the Second World War. Tokyo was still recovering from the war, repairing buildings and train systems in time for the Olympics. In fact, Tokyo went beyond repair.

Today (20 July 2012) we visited the Japanese Embassy to see the new “Tokyo 1964” Olympics exhibition. This exhibition was filled with all sorts of photos, literature, information and other memorabilia from the 1964 games (and the months preceding them!).

On Tuesday 17th July, we were treated to a fantastic performance at St Martin-in-the-Fields by the brilliant Ueda/Rinaldo duo. Lisa Ueda is a Japanese violinist who graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a First Class Honours. The opening piece, Janacek’s “Sonata for Violin and Piano” was dramatic and heartfelt, and effectively conveyed the feelings of the composer.

Sumidagawa is a fifteenth century Noh play, while Curlew River, a church parable, is an adaptation of it by Benjamin Britten – both will be performed at Christ Church Spitalfields, London on 7 September at 6:30 pm and at St Bartholomew in Orford, Suffolk on 9 September at 3:00 pm. I was given a tour of Daiwa Foundation Japan House and the premises seem good. I met the staff—they seem friendly. I learnt some new Japanese vocabulary and kanji . I wrote a leaflet called ‘Tips for Learning Japanese’. I looked up some Japan-related art exhibitions and was told that we (me and a member of staff—I think Ali or Susan) will visit one later in the week.
